2014 Chevy Malibu Updated in Style and Economy

Set to go on sale this fall at a Chevy dealer in Phoenix, Chevrolet has recently released details of their latest 2014 Malibu. It includes updated styling, a revised interior, a new 2.5L standard engine and suspension enhancements. Among the changes, the biggest news is that all Malibu models will get stop-start technology on the standard model, which shuts down the engine while stopped to conserve fuel.

Fitted to a new 2.5-liter gasoline engine design with variable valve lift control and direct injection, stop-start helps contribute to estimated city economy of 23 mpg and a 35 mpg highway rating. According to Chevy, it is about a 5 percent and 3 percent improvement over the old model. To ensure functions like the stereo and climate control still work while the engine is switched off, an auxiliary battery powers these accessories. When you take your foot off the brake, the engine restarts.

The new engine also offers lower emissions and a little more power.  The variable lift valves reduce lift and when demand is low, opens them further for more power when under load or at higher speeds. A 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine is still available, with 259 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque. Chassis updates on both models improve ride quality and reduce body roll, using techniques inspired by the 2014 Impala.

The most visible changes are a new look influenced by the sharp-suited new Impala, with a more prominent lower grille and narrower upper grille. Chrome accents give the 2014 Chevy Malibu a more distinctive look than before. Redesigned seats improve comfort and interior space with just over an inch of extra rear knee room.  Also, a redesigned center console now features a longer armrest, with a pair of cup holders and storage for two cellphones.

Safety features including Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also now available, as is a rear-view camera system. 10 airbags are standard.
