2016 Impala Features Active Phone Cooling

Chevrolet is raising the bar once again by offering a feature no other auto manufacturer has. In order to combat the problem of cell phone overheating, Chevy has come up with a way to charge your phone wirelessly and help keep it from getting too hot. Named “Active Phone Cooling,” the system involves placing your phone in a special bin that is cooled by the vehicle’s air conditioning and HVAC system. This feature not only keeps your phone cool, but also charges your phone wirelessly so you can do away with those troublesome cords.

System Helps Save Battery Life

“Over time, regular overheating can do permanent damage to the lithium ion batteries that power our smartphones,” said Jeffrey Van Camp of Digital Trends, a website devoted to technology. “I always recommend keeping your phone in a cool, ventilated place, where it can stay at a comfortable room temperature.” Factors like heavy data use, tasking the graphics processor to the max and charging can all lead to phone overheating, but none are as bad as leaving your device in a hot car during the summer.

Utilize Phone for Media While Charging

New Chevrolet Impala buyers can use their smartphones to hook up with MyLink, Chevy’s infotainment system that plays music or allows handsfree phone use for voice and texting through either vocal commands or controls on the steering wheel. The Impala also offers Apple CarPlay this year, which provides access to a number of popular apps. The simplicity of the design for the Active Phone Cooling is what Chevy engineers like best about the feature. “Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel,” said Dan Lascu, Impala engineer. “Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem.” Phone cooling will also be available in any Chevrolet that includes wireless charging, including the 2016 Malibu, Volt and Cruze.

2016 Impala Offers Other New Choices

Along with the wireless charging and cooling station, Chevy has also rolled out some new colors for the 2016 Chevrolet Impala. Siren Red, Citron Green, Heather Gray and Mosaic Black are all possible selections. Green Envy Metallic is also an option at an added price. Chevy also added front and rear splash guards and updated the Side Blind Zone Alert safety package to include Lane Change Alert.
