2018 Equinox Offers Multi-Turbo Lineup

Compact SUV Only One to Offer Diesel

With a choice of three engines, including a 1.6L turbo-diesel, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox offers consumers more variety than any other compact SUV. Whether you choose the 1.5L turbo, 2.0L turbo or the diesel, the Equinox has the vehicle to fit your transportation needs. “With three choices, customers can select an engine that offers more of the attributes that are important to them: efficiency, performance and capability,” according to Dan Nicholson, VP of Global Propulsion Systems. “The advantage for each is the power of a larger engine and the fuel economy of a smaller engine.” The multi-engine turbocharged lineup is a first for Chevy in North America. See all the options and make your choice with a visit to Freeway Chevrolet.

Choose from Ultra-efficient, Power or Torque

The three engines offer three unique choices for SUV buyers. Pick the smaller engine and you get ample horsepower, but outstanding 31 mpg efficiency on the highway. Opt for the larger gas engine and horsepower climbs to 252 with a wide range of top torque for towing and quick acceleration. That engine gives the Equinox a 3,500 pound trailering capacity, more than enough for small recreational needs. The 2.0L engine only costs you about 3 mpg on the highway. Diesels are known for their low-end torque, and the Equinox doesn’t disappoint. With 236 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm, the diesel engine continues to maintain power through a broad range thanks to a variable-geometry turbo charger. This diesel is also one of the most refined in the industry, with stop/start technology.

Turbocharging all the Rage at Chevrolet

The Equinox is not the only Chevy taking advantage of the extra compression generated by a turbocharger. Camaro, Malibu, Cruze, Sonic and Trax all have gas turbo options. The Colorado and Silverado pickup have a turbo-diesel engine available. Stepping on the gas to kick in the turbos increases the power without affecting the efficiency of the engine under light loads. The 2.0L gas turbo in the Equinox is paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission that has smaller delineations between gears to increase efficiency and provide a smooth ride. Thanks to some clever linear design, the 9-speed transmission is roughly the same weight as the old 6-speed. You can test drive the 2018 Chevy Equinox and all three engine choices next spring when it arrives at the Freeway Chevrolet showroom.
